Original Juan Specialty Foods named 2011 sofi Silver Finalist in the “Oscars” of Food22-Apr-2011
The National Association for the Specialty Food Trade (NASFT) announces that Original Juan’s Harvest Apple BBQ Sauce has been selected as one of five Silver Finalists in the cooking sauce category
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE KANSAS CITY, KS April 21, 2011 – NASFT has selected Original Juan’s American Stockyard Harvest Apple BBQ Sauce as a Silver Finalist in the 39th sofi Awards. This prestigious award recognizes excellence in the specialty foods and beverage industry, honoring stand-out products in 31 categories. “Sofi” stands for Specialty Outstanding Food Innovation. Dubbed the “Oscars” of specialty food, an elite panel of food experts spend three days tasting and evaluating over 1,600 entries to select 110 finalists. Original Juan’s Harvest Apple BBQ Sauce was selected as one of the top five entries in the cooking sauce or flavor enhancer category.
“It is a tremendous honor to have our American Stockyard BBQ Sauce selected as a sofi finalist,” says Joe Polo, owner of Original Juan. “I’m proud of the Original Juan team for developing a sauce that is creating this kind of buzz in the industry.”
The Kansas City company has been creating and manufacturing specialty sauces, salsa, snacks and dips for wholesale and retail customers since 1998. The company also provides co-pack/private label services to over 100 companies throughout the world. Original Juan products can be found in over 2,000 stores nationwide, as well as distributed throughout Australia, Canada, Sweden, UK, Germany, Switzerland and Finland.
The American Stockyard line is all-natural, gluten free, and contains no high fructose corn syrup. The line was released in January 2011. There are seven BBQ sauces and one baked bean starter in the line, capturing the regional flavors and unique styles of stockyards throughout the nation. The Harvest Apple BBQ Sauce is a creative blend of tart Washington apples, brown sugar and flavorful spices. The sauce is handcrafted using Original Juan’s Micro-Batch manufacturing process. This process is a manner of food production where products are kettle-cooked in small batches with an emphasis on quality and flavor.
“As a specialty food manufacturer, there is no higher honor than to be recognized as a finalist for a sofi Award,” says Lindsay Howerton, Vice President of Marketing at Original Juan. “There are so many innovative products in the industry, we are humbled to be recognized as one of the best in our category.”
The sofi Awards are considered the highest honor in the $70 billion specialty food industry in the United States. Gold Winners will be announced at a red-carpet event on July 11, 2011, at NASFT’s Summer Fancy Food Show in Washington, D.C. Cat Cora, a noted chef and television food personality, will be hosting the event.
Original Juan has been awarded four Silver Finalists Awards and one Gold Winner Award in past NASFT sofi competitions. Some of the company’s most recognizable brands are Pain is Good, Fiesta Juan’s, Bilardo Brothers and Mama Capri.
